Urine Drug Test Overview

A urine drug test analyzes a urine specimen for evidence of selected drugs or their metabolites, the substances produced as the body processes a drug.

Depending on the test ordered, a urine drug screen may check for several commonly tested drug categories. Available testing panels and requirements may vary based on the employer, agency, organization, or purpose of the test.

Urine testing may be used for:

Collection Process

We understand that drug testing can feel stressful or uncomfortable. Our staff works to provide a respectful, efficient, and confidential experience while following the procedures required for your particular test.  The collection process includes:

Step 1 – Check In

A valid photo ID and any paperwork, authorization form, registration information, and any testing instructions provided by the requesting organization are reviewed by our team at one of our Express Lab locations.

Step 2 – Provide the Specimen

A trained collector will explain the collection process and provide a specimen container.  The individual will be directed to a designated collection area to provide the urine sample.

Most routine collections are completed privately. Certain regulated, return-to-duty, follow-up, or legally required tests may have additional monitoring or observation requirements.

Step 3 – Specimen Verification

After the specimen is returned, the collector will inspect and process it according to the requirements of the ordered test. When required, the specimen will be divided into primary and split samples, sealed with tamper-evident materials, and documented using chain-of-custody procedures.

Step 4 – Laboratory Testing

The specimen is submitted for the specific testing ordered by the employer, agency, healthcare provider, or individual. Some programs require laboratory confirmation or review by a Medical Review Officer before a final result is reported.

Step 5 – Results Communicated

Once completed, the results are released only to the individual, or organization authorized to receive them, in line with requested reporting procedure.

Screening and Confirmation Testing

An initial drug screen is designed to identify specimens that may require additional evaluation. When required, a non-negative screening result may be sent to our laboratory for sample confirmation using a more specific laboratory method.

For regulated or workplace programs, a qualified Medical Review Officer may review confirmed laboratory findings and relevant medical information before reporting a final verified result.

A screening result by itself should not be interpreted as a medical diagnosis.
